Digestion of food starts in the mouth, before traveling along the gastrointestinal tract to the stomach and small intestine to be broken down further. Gastric juices and enzymes from the stomach, pancreas, liver and gallbladder help to digest food and allow the body to absorb nutrients. Food can spend around 3-5 hours in the small intestine, where most digestion and absorption of nutrients takes place. Tiny, finger-like projections called villi line the inside of the small intestine, and allow nutrients from our food to be absorbed into the bloodstream. Any leftover food that can’t be absorbed is then moved into the large intestine where remaining water is absorbed and a solid waste is formed that can be excreted from the body.

Having an uncomfortable or upset stomach can often mean that something isn’t quite right. Our digestion should comfortable, free from gas and bloating, and bowel movements should be regular and easy to pass.
